Duncan drummed his fingers on the steel table. They were stuck in an old interrogation room. Talk about lack of funding, Duncan thought bitterly, they cant even afford their own building.
Hes a frickin delinquent! Courtney screamed, waving her hands in the air wildly. How the hell is he going to protect me!? Hell probably kill me in my sleep or something.
Courtney, dear, please calm down. This is for your own good, a blond woman spoke softly. Duncan is a very nice boy once you get to know him. I think you two will become really good friends because of this.
I am not nice, Duncan stated flatly.
The blond, who insisted on being called by her first name, Michelle, rather than Miss Wayne, glared icily at the boy. Not helping, she said angrily, clenching her teeth to keep from raising her voice.
Whatever, Blondie, Duncan said, watching Courtney continue to rant about everything under the sun. Her long black hair was flying around as she spoke. Her light beige eyes darting around the room as she accused Michelle and Duncan.
Michelle let out a large breath to calm herself. Courtney, shut up and sit down.
Dont speak to me like-
Park it, Princess, Duncan said, he was so tired of her yelling. He wouldve sat her ass in that chair himself if he didnt think shed sue him for sexual harassment.
Well, I never, Courtney mumbled as she slumped in her chair, arms crossed, eyes rolling.
As I was saying, Michelle began, we will have to change your identity, Courtney. Name, eye color, hair color and length, everything we can do to make sure no one recognizes you.
Wait a minute. My, my hair? Courtneys hands flew up to grasp the soft curls that hung over her shoulders.
Yes, your hair. Dye it and cut it. Michelle said, before walking towards the door. Ill go make the arrangements. How about you two get to know eachother? Itll help the transition. She then slipped out the door, thanking God that she wouldnt have to hear Courtney for the next few hours.
This is horrible, Courtney ranted, absolute hell!
Dont hold back or anything, Duncan commented, rolling his eyes at her childish behavior. He could tell she had been spoiled to death by every person who stepped into her life up to this time.
So, who are you anyway? Courtney asked suddenly, showing she had realized the situation wasnt going to get better if she kept complaining.
Duncan. Duncan Wilkens. Duncan cocked his head to the side, signaling her to state her name aswell.
Courtney. Courtney Banks. I am a certified C.I.T., so I know how to handle myself, Courtney replied proudly. Which means I am in no need of protection.
And a C.I.T. would be?
A Counselor in Training.
So you’re saying you can camp? Duncan asked, making his tone sounding as bored as possible.
They teach you more than just camping, Duncan, Courtney retaliated. They teach you how to survive in an environment youre not used to.
So youre saying that if you were dumped on some island, with twenty-one other teens, by some sadistic host and were forced to do a Survivor-like show, you would be prepared? Duncan asked, doubtful she would even be able to follow the question. (A/N: Get it? Please tell me you get it…)
I guess that would be an accurate assessment, Courtney said, nodding.
But that would never happen. Therefore, theyre just a bunch of wasted skills.
No! They may become useful some day. You never know what will happen, Courtney argued.
Whatever you say, Duncan said, rolling his eyes. Have any siblings?
Courtney sat there quietly for a few seconds before responding, as if she were contemplating something. She shook her head. You?
Three sisters and a brother.
Tell me about them, Courtney said, sitting up straight to show that she was truly interested.
Well, the youngest is Ami. Shes four and going into kindergarten. She has curly dark brown hair and is the most spoiled out of all of us. The next is Parker. Shes twelve and going into seventh grade. Shes a tomboy and also has dark brown hair, she always has her bangs hanging in her face. Shes also addicted to skateboarding.
Keep going, Courtney urged. She was actually enjoying this.
Then, theres Gavin, hes fourteen, a freshman. His best friend Gabriella is constantly at the house. After that is me. And last, is my older sister Christi, whos seventeen. Her boyfriend also never leaves the house, Duncan said, nodding his head to show he was done.
So, you have nine people in your house most of the time? Courtney questioned, assuming his parents were still together.
Ten if you include Dakota, Duncan said, leaning back in his chair, putting his hands behind his head.
Whos Dakota? Courtney asked, cocking her head to the side.
Our dog. Duncan put his feet up on the table and began rocking his chair. You ever had any pets?
I almost had a goldfish once. Bought it with my own money. But I dont think he counts. Courtney looked up towards the ceiling, recalling the memory.
How do you almost have a goldfish? If you bought it, that is. Duncan gave her a questioning look.
Well, on the way home, she began, we had to go over a really bumpy road. And, when we got off the road, I realized that my goldfish was floating belly up.
Thatsinteresting? Duncan said, confused.
Yeah. Ive been a loner my whole life, I guess. Especially compared to you, Courtney said.
Well, my parents werent planning on having any kids as early as they did, Duncan said.
What happened?
Oh. Just failed birth control, broken condoms, drunken nights. You know, the usual, Oh shit, Im pregnant, situations, Duncan replied as if he were answering an everyday question. We all have the same dad, though. So its all good.
I dont think my parents have ever been drunk a day in their lives. Maybe a few too many glasses of champagne, but never enough to cause any problems like pregnancy.
Yeah, well, my parents may be cops, but they sure know how to party their asses off, Duncan said proudly. He loved how his parents could do college level partying even though their job didnt exactly approve of it.
How old were they when they started your family?
Mom was fifteen and Dad was nineteen, Duncan said after a few moments of trying to think of their current ages and do the math to come up with an answer.
Jeez, my parents were in their twenties, Courtney said, surprised at how young his parents had began their relationship.
Well, well, well, Michelle began as she walked into the room, you didnt kill each other. I am very pleased. Did you guys become friends?
No, Courtney said sternly. I was simply trying to figure out what I am going to have to deal with during this, eh, adventure.
Liar, Duncan coughed out.
Excuse me? Courtney snapped.
You seemed a lot more interested than any other person would have if they didnt want to know for personal reasons.
And just when I thought you were capable of being a decent human being, Courtney said under her breath.
Anyway, Michelle said before Duncan could retaliate, its time for us get a move on with the identity changing.
I guess its now or never, Courtney said with a sigh. She got up and began to walk towards the door. You coming? she asked, turning the top half of her body to face him.
Well, would you look at that, Duncan commented. Princess wants me to go with her. And I thought she was in total denial.
Just come on, Courtney snapped. Michelles waiting.
Maybe youll come to find that change is good, Duncan said as he closed the door behind him.
Change isgood? Courtney questioned. I doubt it. Especially this kind of change.
